Artful aka Mark Hill is still the man to watch, there I said it! After gingerly edging his way back on the scene, we get our first definitive release from Artful Mark with his ‘Unfinished Business EP’. Featuring a selection of smooth and expertly produced UKG anthems, you can rest assured that Mark has not lost any of his skills.
The EP opens up with Marks trademark guitar and Pizzacato strings on ‘Architect’ I feel goosebumps down my spine and I am immediately transported to 1997 and re living the excitement I felt when I first heard Artful Dodger ‘Something’ pumping out through the crackle of my little radio.
Slipping seamlessly into ‘Wasteman’ my favourite track of the EP we get the the treacly tones of Donae’o on one of the most well written and produced tracks I have heard for a long while. A breakbeat melodic ride of a tune the synergy between vocal and melody is so tight that I would take the chance to say this is the best I have heard of Donae’o. IMHO this is the ‘Think About Me’ moment of the EP.
Terri Walker steps up to the plate for the sexy and bouncy dance floor friendly ‘He Loves Me’ which contains all the elements that made UKG great in a nutshell, the pizzacatos, the bouncing bassline, the sweet soulful female vocals, preferably about heart break, and a ragga djing break what more could you want.
There is a very solid UKG Remix of Wasteman which is most definitely a dancefloor driver, although my preference is still very much for the original.
For the purists there is ‘Quick’ which is pure underground UKG and took me a little by surprise as I remember when the air waves were full of tracks like these which you hear love and never be able to track down or be floating around on exclusive dubplates or limited presses. By the way The Rhodes in this track are f**king phenomenal.
The biggest surprise of this EP is reserved for the finale which is a epic 8 min Progressive House anthem, and all of a sudden reminded me that while Mark Hill had been on hiatus he had been DJing in Ibiza with a weekly radio show to boot. Is this a suggestion that Artful Mark is going to be producing some more 4 to the floor beats? Some epic main room house? Is he going to gatecrash the stage mid way through an Avicii set and tear the roof off? I don’t know but I am throughly enthused to know what is coming next.
